Two Jobs Tax Calculator — Common Questions

How Tax on Two Jobs Works in the UK

Your overall tax bill is based on your total income across all jobs, using one personal allowance and one set of tax bands — exactly as if it were a single salary. What trips people up is how that liability gets collected: HMRC typically gives your main job the standard tax code (with your personal allowance) and puts your second job on a BR (Basic Rate) code, taxing all of it at 20% with no allowance. National Insurance, unlike income tax, is normally calculated separately for each employer.

Important Notes

This calculator assumes your personal allowance is applied entirely to Job 1. In reality HMRC can split your allowance between employers if you ask them to, which changes how tax is withheld (though not your total annual liability). It also assumes both employers are unconnected, so National Insurance thresholds apply separately to each job.
